Sandy-Dee – Teaching

I love to teach, it’s a space that I naturally gravitate towards and have received such positive feedback for. I began teaching without a formal teaching degree and found great joy in the interactions with my students and this led me to pursue my PGCE in Foundation Phase teaching.

I’ve been teaching hoop dance for over 5 years and completed my Elemental Hoop Dance Certificate under Shakti Sunfire at the beginning of 2016. Teaching hoop dance allows me to share the profound shift that occurred in my life since picking up a hula hoop. It unleashed a fresh flow of inspiration, creativity, and expression and taught me to live from a space of authenticity. Hooping is my expression, my healing, my meditation. It provides me with a channel for love, and through teaching I am able to share this love and joy.

Basil – Teaching

I have been teaching along side my wife since 2013. We both have different styles of teaching with a good balance of masculine and feminine energy. Hooping came to me and I kind of got lost in that circle as well as in the community here in Cape Town.

Hooping has built in me a confidence that hasn’t been present in my life before. I’m more willing to try new things, follow my dreams and simply be myself. Teaching people to hoop is one of my biggest inspirations in that way. It’s my moving meditation, where I can safely centre myself.

Sandy-Dee – Performance

I have been spinning fire since 2010 purely for personal gratification. I began performing with Basil in 2013 and became more drawn to the performance of hoop dance and fire because of the bond we shared and the impact we had on our audience. People always comment on how they loved the energy between us and how magical it made the whole performance. I perform to inspire people through purposeful movement and story telling. I perform because it’s fun and it brings a little magic into this world.

The fire hoop is my specialty, but I also play fire fans, and palm candles. I am currently learning double fire staff and fire eating.  I made a fire skirt to add to my repertoire and because it is a show stopper and fun to be in.

Basil – Performance

I spun fire for the first time in the same year I started hooping.Shortly after that I performed with a fire hoop for the first time. Sandy and I started rehearsing together for a performance and there was a natural flow to the way we worked together. Since then I have also taken an interest in performances as a package – choreography, lighting, song choice(s), decor, costume, theatre, etc. Creating a different world for people to be engaged in, or to engage with. I spin fire to push myself, to reach new heights and, as a side effect, see a lot of people smile.

My primary fire prop is the fire hoop. Secondary is fire fans (very, very big fans) and fire eating which is a current favourite. You could say I dabble in fire contact staff.

We are most well known for our duet piece called “Discovering Love”, a 15min fire performance.

A soulful performance piece by real life husband and wife, Basil and Sandra-Dee. This performance is the story of their journey together. From the innocent flirtatious dance around each other to the moment when their eyes lock and they recognise each others soul, igniting the flame of love and passion. The story-line remains the same while the performance is organic in nature as it adjusts to the occasion. We have several versions depending on the theme for the occasion. It has also been adapted for weddings, bachelorette, kids party and a carnival themed event.
