6 Lame Excuses – If not now, then when?

How long have you been incubating that idea of yours? How many times have you rewritten it in your head or on paper? How many times have you said, “This year I’m going to do it,” and then it never happens?

This blog is a note to my Self. Recently I was speaking to a good friend of mine who was really down and frustrated. I was frustrated because I have seen her potential for so long and yet nothing has come of it. She has a lot of great ideas, many of which she already has the outline or full content. I remarked that the problem with both of us is we have these amazing ideas but we never get around to executing them. We have so many excuses for not getting there and there are two simple truths behind our inability to activate. Either we are lazy or we are afraid.

Are your excuses anything like mine?

  • I’m not sure how to start
  • It’s not quite perfect, i need to plan more
  • The timing isn’t right
  • What if it doesn’t work?
  • Other people are doing it
  • I just don’t have the time

When researching this blog I came across a great article on Open Forum. They highlighted 10 most common excuses for not making ideas happen. What do you know, all six of my fabulous excuses were there! So let’s look at these 6 excuses.

I’m not sure how to start.

This normally happens to me when I feel overwhelmed. My idea is so grand, so expansive that I feel in order for it to succeed everything must be in place but that would take months or years. The bigger picture is important but if you spend all your time on the grand scheme you’ll miss all the small steps you need to get you there. Find one small thing that is quick and easy to do and do it. Just get started! Once you let the energy flow, more will follow.

It’s not quite perfect.

Planning, planning, planning and over-planning. When is it too little planning and when is it too much? Honestly I don’t know. The truth is nothing is ever perfect and the only way you are going to know what works and what doesn’t, is to start. Then you can reflect and adapt.

The timing isn’t right.

How will you ever know when the time is right? Start. If it doesn’t quite work out you can figure out why and try again. Basil and I have implemented quite a few things that flopped. Some of them have been about timing, like our camp ‘The Hoop Experience’ which we have put on hold. Other things have had potential and needed to be repeated at another time like MCHC, which grows every year. The point is, just go for it.

Erin Hanson Quote

What if it doesn’t work?

Read ‘I’m afraid of failing’. There is a quote by Erin Hanson ‘What if I fall?’ and the response is ‘Oh, but my Darling, what if you fly?’ It’s that simple. Imagine if a baby was afraid to take his first breath, or take that first step, they simply wouldn’t survive. That first breath must be terrifying and taking your first step only to come tumbling back down must be frustrating, but we learn from these experiences. Before you know it you are not just stepping, you are running a race. This point is all about practicing. At first you won’t succeed but I promise if you start and keep practicing you will get good at it.

Other people are doing it.

So what! There are many radio stations, documentary channels, yoga studios, pre-primary schools, plumbers, life coaches etc. Seriously, this world is so big and there are so many people! I promise there is someone out there that needs what you have to offer. YOU ARE UNIQUE so find your unique take on what the other people are offering and do it. BELIEVE in your SELF, you are awesome!

I just don’t have the time.

Now that I’m a mom I really understand that time is relative. If you need some, then make some. Somehow I manage to do more with my days now than I did before I became mommy. Yes, it requires work. So stop being lazy!

I hope this helps you set your dreams in motion. I highly recommend you read the Open Forum article.

I wrote this blog because I needed to take my own advice. Among other things I have finally set the date for my very first Inspired Teacher Training course. If you are wanting to get started as a hoop teacher then maybe the first step could be to join my course. This world needs more hoop teachers and you are UNIQUE!  You can find more information under Hooping Events on our website.

stay afraid, but do it anyway
